Educating more than 100 illegal Burmese sex workers per every year about the HIV/AIDS, providing counseling services, helping them to use the available health resources locally, and practice the inclusive theory in community building. (Introduction page)
BWU has been running this pilot HIV/AIDS education program for one year and the program has been effective in providing important services needed for the young women sex workers from Burma.
BWU started this pilot project after its members in the area realized the need for these women and having the capacity to do this work among the members who have been trained by Save the Children and EMPOWER on HIV/AIDS education. Doing this BWU has been able to support and empower between 75-100 women sex workers from Burma each year, who are the most marginalized population in the society, through services and informational/educational workshops on women's health and HIV/AIDS, women's rights, and other women related issues.
BWU members assist these women by providing condoms, vitamins, interpretation, nutritional foods to those who are ill, and transportation service, organizing and facilitating workshops on women's health including personal hygiene, HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD), retreats where the women find sanctuary to build trust and understanding of each other, and clinic visits, and other emergency assistance based on their crisis situations. |
