Internship Programs in Chiang Mai and Mae Sot

As a long-term objective, BWU wishes to invest in the future of young women and girls. One way to accomplish this objective is to create a space for young women from the camps, migrant community and inside Burma. These women would greatly benefit from receiving training so that they can improve their skills and perhaps one day become leaders in the organization and the movement as a whole.

With this aim BWU run this pilot internship program in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 and the graduates of the first badge and the second proved that the program is a great benefit to young women like them who lost educational opportunity and could have gone the wrong direction in life. In this internship program they improve their language, computing and communication skills as well as knowledge and understanding on such issues as human rights, women’s rights, and democracy. This program has been highly praised by many outside visitors and the English teachers/volunteers after testing and witnessing the overall improvement of these young women. BWU leadership also evaluated the program to be a very successful program and therefore plans to continue to run this program. Selection of the young women is based on their educational and life background. They are required to have high school education level in order to participate in the program.

As to mention the previous interns, many girls have joined the Burmese Women's Union and are now actively working in the programs, such as drop in center, libraries, assistant in-charge of the internship programs, Dove magazine and CM main office. As for the girls who were second line leaders of the regions in the camps are now taking the first leadership and some chose to become trainers on women rights and gender equality issues.

We choose interns from the refugee camps, migrant community and from inside Burma. From the refugee camps the interns will be regional leaders and girls who have finished high school. From inside Burma and the migrant community, the interns will be girls who want to continue their studies and are interested in the women's movement. This furthers their education and offers them protection as well. Meanwhile, BWU wants them to contribute their skills and knowledge in the community where they live. BWU will arrange for their training and assist them in applying for and receiving scholarships.

The internship programs will be divided into two parts. As for Mae Sot, the program will be called Young Women Development Center. This idea came out after the Organizational Development Workshop finished and we think it will be more appropriate to call YWDC rather than internship program since we are providing training on computer, English, Thai language, study on general knowledge, especially focus on gender equality, study on international women movement, Burmese history, Burmese women movement and international political study. The girls will be chosen through selection process. We will choose the girls who finished high school, age between 16-25 and have interest on women movement forward gender equality in the society.

For Chiang Mai internship, interns will be trained at the BWU headquarter in Chiang Mai. They are regional leaders; young girls who believe have talent and new staffs for different programs. They will be trained technical skills depend on their works professional, general knowledge and will provide training on accounting or bookkeeping, office management, community organizing, leadership skills, computer training (to learn programs, Photoshop, website creating, PageMaker in order to do layout), library management, and conflict resolution.  BWU needs to train more young women, capable regional leaders to be able to participate in all spares of social changes and needs.
